Here's a true story about my brother-in-law, Roy Bernard Hovel '35, a star student and a star athlete at Campion in the 1930's.

There's a fine restaurant in Glenview, IL, on north side of Lake Street and just east of Waukegan Road). It's name is Hackney's. (There are three or four Hackney's restaurants in the Chicago area, but the one I'm talking about is the one on Lake just east of Waukegan.)

At any rate, if you ever happen to stop by there, be sure to go down the long and somewhat dark hall towards the main dining room. Just before entering that dining room, on the wall on the right-hand side, there is a 11" by 8-1/2" framed photo of the Campion High School Football team (the official Team Photo, I would imagine) from the year 1934. I know this for a certainty because my brother-in-law (Roy Bernard Hovel, class '35) was one of the star linemen on that team. He is shown clearly in the picture as is "The Box," as we all fondly called Coach Hoffman. (If you ever had met Hovel--later a famous lawyer in the Sun Prairie and Madison, Wisconsin, areas), you would have spotted him as a football player first from look at the size of the man (he was a giant--in more ways than one), and secondly from shaking hands with him. He had the biggest hands that I've ever seen or tried to shale.

Hovel came from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin--about 18 miles northeast of Madison. I've never been able to find out who it was that saw to it that the Campion Footballl Team picture of '35 is hanging--to this very day--on the Hackney's wall. Unfortunately he passed away before I had even noticed the picture was there, so I was unable to ask him about it. I suspect that some other members of the team that year were also in the picture and perhaps one was the original owner of Hackney's or one of it's original patrons. (It had a very popular bar!)

Hovel graduated from Campion in 1935 and went on to play football at Marquette University, in the days when M.U. still had a football team. As a matter of fact, the Marquette team must have been pretty good because it was selected to play in the very first Cotton Bowl Game:

Scroll down a few lines to see the record. Unfortunately, the Knights lost to TCU by a score of 16 to 6.
